Description
Dear Ms. Ashcraft,
I am so sorry, but I gave you some wrong information. I went back to check things and here’s what I found: The Episcopal Church is on Grand Avenue and Santa Clara, not Central, and there are two signs posted there that say “No Parking.” I didn’t notice them because I saw a line of cars parked there the length of the block, so I paid no attention to the signs. I suspect that applies to all the other people who got tickets on December 29 as well.
Perhaps the answer would be to sweep Grand Avenue on some day other than Tuesday, which would be one way of making sure picking up their food wouldn’t be a hardship for the Alamedans being helped by the Alameda Food Bank. I hope that’s possible, because it seems to be the only answer.
Again, I apologize for my mistake.

We discussed the rescheduling of street sweeping days with our Maintenance staff and determined that it was not possible. The street sweeping schedule is a complicated matrix of routes throughout the City and it would be problematic to change.
We then approached the church about rescheduling their Food Bank day, and they said that it was not possible, as well. They have been running the program for about 10 years, and changing the day would be confusing. Additionally, they had no concern regarding the street sweeping day.
We reviewed the placement of street sweeping signs on the block and determined that it is adequate. There is a large sign at the beginning of the block, near the intersection of Central Avenue, and two signs beside the church within 100 feet of each other.
At this time, we recommend no changes. The signs are adequate and we do not want to proliferate the street with unnecessary signage. We will continue to monitor the situation to see if additional changes are needed.
