Description

The middle lane of Mecartney crossing Island heading toward Maitland was incorrectly sriped as a left turn lane last year. The error was caught, and the left turn arrow was sandblasted off, but the damage was done. During the morning and evening commutes especially, drivers execute left urns from the middle lane and are creating dangerous "near miss" collisions because this 4 way stop is too busy and complicated and legal left turning cars are not expecting the middle lane next to them to be on their right, so they hang it wide into the right lane, forcing the illegal driver to veer or slam on their brakes. Traffic heading West across the intersection are not expecting a second car (from the middle lane) to turn left in front of them, and this has also led to serious danger, slamming of brakes, and brandishing of middle fingers by all parties.

This increasing stream of illegal left turns was directly caused by the City as the sandblasted left turn arrow is still visible and in the right conditions could be mistaken for official striping. When the traffic lanes are filled by 3 or four cars backed up (during commute hours) NO signage or striping is visible, and those drivers who began performing the dangerous and illegal left turns most likely feel feel that the absence of signage / striping, the the "vestigial" left arrow in the middle lane, and the increasing number of other drivers making unlawful turns somehow permits the behavior.

Obviously the Island/Mecartney 4 way stop is a large complicated intersection that is pushing the envelope of what a 4 way stop can handle. Eventually a signal will be required. But in the meantime, a weekday morning/evening commute doesn't pass without a close call. it would be my intention to hold the City responsible for the danger that the incorrect striping and current lack of signage and current striping create.
